Humanity is distinguished by its ability to reflect. Throughout our history, there have been many great thinkers, philosophers and theologians who have striven to understand themselves and the world in a deeper way.
Reflection is not reserved for these specific types of people. However, we can learn from individuals who have dedicated a lot of their time deepening their understanding of themselves, the world and God.
These are some practical tips that can facilitate our times of reflection;
Firstly, there are already so many barriers to spending any amount of time in silence and at peace. Technology, an overabundance of distractions, a hurried life are amongst numerous things that can prevent us from having time for ourselves.
Therefore, it is important to create, or find an environment that aids you. Remove clutter in the place you want to reflect in, or find a spot in nature which enables you to be at rest.
Comfort is another vital tool to assist us. Trying to spend time reflecting (and not doing) is already difficult, let alone if we have to constantly adjust our chair and posture. Be as comfortable as you can, without having too much temptation of falling asleep. Being in an upright position helps.
Crucially, you must find what works best for you. Everyone has their own method, but sometimes we have not found it yet. Make alterations to your environment if you are finding it very difficult to enter into a reflective spirit.
Lastly, it might help to write after or during your time of reflection. This can help us to process what we have just considered, to keep track of what we are noticing in our time of reflection. It also offers a record which we can turn to further on, to recall our thoughts when we were reflecting upon specific things. Often, we go through the same experiences that require processing. Having a window into our past considerations when going through a similar thing can be a great consolation.
Writing on paper can help us process our thoughts in a more profound way, as it takes longer than typing and offers less distraction.
